Victory over the Seattle Storm on Sunday improved the Indiana Fever’s win streak to five, the longest in the WNBA, and the team has won eight of the last 10 without Caitlin Clark

Caitlin Clark was absent yet again on Sunday as the Indiana Fever faced the Seattle Storm, but the team continues to find a way to win without its star player.

Clark has suffered multiple injuries this season and is currently sidelined with a groin issue after dealing with a quadriceps strain earlier this year. However, despite missing the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year, the Fever won its fifth-straight game on Sunday.

Indiana beat Seattle 78-74, as Natasha Howard, Aliyah Boston, and Sophie Cunningham combined for 54 points. The Fever has the longest win streak in the WNBA and has won eight of the last 10 games. Meanwhile, the WNBA commissioner has made her feelings on Clark perfectly clear after her pay stunt.

Clark stayed healthy throughout her collegiate career at Iowa and played every game for Indiana during her rookie WNBA season. However, when Clark suffered her first setback since high school earlier this season, there were concerns over how Indiana would perform.

While Clark’s absence was evident earlier this season, the team has overcome the initial hurdle. Indiana is now 17-12 on the season, and nine wins have been earned without Clark on the court.

Due to the recurring injury problems, Fever head coach Stephanie White has clarified that Clark won’t return until there is zero risk of re-aggravating an injury. With the WNBA Playoffs looming and Indiana in a strong position, Clark’s return could be further delayed.

“I know she wants to be out on the floor and we want her out on the floor, but making sure that she’s ready is the most important thing,” White said after Sunday’s game. “I still don’t know how far we are, we’re going to take it one step at a time, one day at a time.”

Kelsey Mitchell, Howard, Boston, and Cunningham have all stepped up in Clark’s absence. When joining the organization this season, Cunningham explained how excited she was to play with Clark, but also recognized the strong roster built around her.

In an exclusive interview with Mirror U.S. Sports, Cunningham said: “I’m so excited. I just think it’s a new opportunity. It’s more my style of play, motion offense, running gun, kick and shoot. That’s where I thrive, that’s where I’ve always thrived.

“So I think it’s just gonna be fun to keep growing my career and keep showing people what I can do. But I really am excited about the people I’m gonna be with. Obviously, you have Caitlin Clark, but I’m also excited to be back with DeWanna Bonner, Natasha Howard, Sydney Colson, Aliyah Boston, and Kelsey Mitchell.

“We just have a really, really good squad. Great coaching staff, great front office. I just think it’s a really good time to be there.”

Bonner is no longer on the roster, but the other highlighted players have all thrived this season. Cunningham, too, has been in red-hot form during the Fever’s winning run.

Cunningham has averaged 11 points during the past five games, well above her 7.7 season average. The former Phoenix Mercury guard made it clear earlier this season that she was in championship mode and has stepped up.
