The football world is in mourning after the sudden and tragic death of Liverpool’s star player, Diogo Jota, who passed away at just 28 years old in a devastating car accident. The Portuguese forward, beloved for his skill on the field and his warm, loving personality off it, was killed in a road traffic accident in Zamora, Spain, on Thursday morning. His younger brother, Andre Jota, also tragically lost his life in the same incident.

Diogo Jota’s untimely death has sent shockwaves through the sports community, particularly after the recent joy of his wedding to long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, just weeks earlier. The couple, who had been together for years, were married on June 22, 2025, in a stunning ceremony in Porto. The event marked a joyous milestone in their lives, and the couple’s three young children—two sons and a daughter—were the highlight of their happiness. Their youngest child, a daughter born in November 2024, was the newest addition to the family, and Diogo had spoken fondly of his children in recent months.

A Heartfelt Promise to His Family

Just one month before his daughter’s birth, Diogo had opened up in an intimate video on Liverpool FC’s YouTube channel, discussing the challenges of balancing his high-pressure football career with family life. Speaking candidly with the club’s performance psychologist, Lee Richardson, Jota explained the emotional toll of being a professional athlete and a dedicated father.

“As a team sport, you can sometimes hide or benefit from what the team is doing or not. In individual sports, it’s clear when something’s wrong,” Jota shared. He went on to talk about the importance of being present for his family after a long day on the pitch. “When I go home after playing, I still have a family. I have two kids, three almost, and the dogs, and the stress doesn’t stop. You want to be the best father you can be.”

In a powerful moment, Diogo shared his dedication to leading by example. “I had this yesterday after the game. I wanted to get a bit of rest, but one of my kids wanted to play some football, and you need to be on it,” he explained. His commitment to being a loving, active father despite the demanding nature of his career is a testament to the kind of man he was both on and off the field.

“I still feel like when I enter the pitch, everything clears,” he continued. “It doesn’t come across my mind. I’m just doing what I know to do best.”

A Dream Wedding, a Bright Future Cut Short

Just weeks after Diogo’s heartfelt reflections, tragedy struck. On June 22, 2025, Diogo and Rute celebrated their wedding day with friends and family in an intimate ceremony in Porto. The couple’s love story was one of resilience, and their family seemed on the brink of a bright future.

Unfortunately, the joy of their wedding was short-lived. On July 4, 2025, the devastating floods in Texas claimed the lives of dozens, including 28 children from the infamous Camp Mystic, where families had sent their children for summer camp. It was during this time that Diogo and Rute, newlyweds, were dealing with their own personal grief after the loss of Diogo’s brother, Andre, and the tragic circumstances that had unfolded.

The Family’s Heartbreaking Loss

In the wake of Diogo’s sudden death, Liverpool FC issued an emotional statement: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club has been informed that the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. The club will be making no further comment at this time and requests the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff be respected as they try to come to terms with this unimaginable loss.”

In a poignant vow to his family, he said: “You want to be the best father you can be”. The star added: “[You] try to lead by example, give him good feedback, even though sometimes you want to get a bit more rest in the afternoon, and they are all happy because you’re finally at home and they want to play. I had this yesterday after the game. I wanted to get a bit of rest. One of my kids wanted to play some football and you need to be on it.”

He also spoke of the stresses that can occur during a football career. “Sometimes with the stress that you have in your life, you forget it. Obviously, everyone has things going on in their lives, whether it’s business or family or whatever,” he openly said.

“I still feel like when I enter the pitch, everything clears. It doesn’t come across my mind, fortunately for me. I’m not sure if that’s the case for all the other players. Every time I’m on the pitch, I’m clear in my mind and I feel like I’m just doing what I know to do best.”
