ch1 White House Backs Pentagon Probe into Sen. Mark Kelly Pam Bondi said Monday that the administration fully supports the Pentagon’s decision to launch an investigation into Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) after he appeared in a video alongside several Democratic lawmakers urging U.S. service members to disobey unlawful commands. “Senator Kelly is well aware of the rules that govern the military and the respect owed to the chain of command,” Bondi told reporters during the press briefing. “All lawful orders are presumed legal by our service members, and that standard must be upheld.” Kelly, a retired Navy captain and former astronaut, joined five other Democratic lawmakers in the video released last week. The group reminded members of the military and intelligence community that they are bound by law to refuse illegal commands. “Like us, you swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution,” the lawmakers said in the clip. “Right now, threats to that Constitution aren’t coming only from abroad, but from within. Our laws are clear: you have both the right and the responsibility to reject illegal orders.” Bondi sharply criticized the message, describing it as an attempt to undermine discipline within the armed forces. “These lawmakers were trying to intimidate our troops and create confusion in the ranks,” she said. “You can’t maintain a functional military when there’s disorder among service members. That’s what these Democrats were promoting in this video, and Senator Kelly and the others should be held accountable.” According to officials, the Pentagon’s internal review will determine whether the video constitutes improper political influence or violates any Department of Defense regulations. The investigation is expected to examine whether lawmakers crossed ethical or legal boundaries by appealing directly to active-duty service members on sensitive constitutional questions. Kelly’s office has not yet commented on the accusations, but sources close to the senator insist his remarks were consistent with long-standing military law and precedent affirming that soldiers must refuse manifestly illegal orders.
