Johnny Depp to star in ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol’ as part of Hollywood comeback

The movie, based on Charles Dickens’s classic tale, is described as a “thrilling ghost story.”
Three ghosts are planning to pay a visit to Johnny Depp over the holidays. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor is set to star in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, an adaptation of Charles Dickens’s 1843 tale from director Ti West, according to Deadline.
Depp will play the grouchy, greedy titular character Ebenezer Scrooge in what’s described by the outlet as a “thrilling ghost story.”
The role marks one of Depp’s first major onscreen performances since his highly publicized divorce from ex-wife Amber Heard, who accused him of abuse. In 2020, Depp sued a U.K. tabloid for calling him a “wife beater,” and the judge ruled it was “substantially true” that the actor had assaulted his then-partner. In the wake of Heard’s allegations, Depp — who has since described the fallout from Heard’s accusations as damaging to his career — resigned from the Harry Potter spinoff franchise Fantastic Beasts in 2020 after he claimed Warner Bros., the studio behind the films, asked him to leave the project.

In 2022, Depp took Heard to court for defamation, suing her for $50 million over a 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she described being a victim of domestic violence. Although Depp wasn’t named in the op-ed, the jury sided with Depp, finding it reasonable to infer the Aquaman actress was referring to him as her alleged abuser.
Depp’s career slowed down in the wake of Heard’s accusations, though he did show up in a select few projects. He appeared as magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith in the film Minamata, which was released in the United States in 2022. He also lent his voice to the animated series Puffins and the video game Sea of Dawn. In 2023, he starred in the French film Jeanne du Barry, which opened the Cannes Film Festival.
Depp is making his return to American cinema with Day Drinker, a thriller from director Marc Webb. It is expected to be released in 2026.
Depp, who previously helmed the 1997 film The Brave, also returned to feature film directing this year. After getting released in Europe in 2024, his movie Modi: Three Days on the Wings of Madness hits American theaters on Nov. 7.
